The inlingua Method is based on decades of experience in language training and is continually being developed to match the needs of a changing world. The emphasis is on direct communication through speaking.

The spoken language is emphasized. Language learners concentrate on their oral competence before turning their attention to reading and additional listening or writing skills.

Whether you need a language for business negotiations or meetings, to pass a language certificate or just for socializing and shopping, inlingua has a course for you.

inlingua language trainers ensure that learners experience the presentation, practice and production stages in sequence. Within each stage a wide range of different training techniques and activities are used to keep training sessions interesting and motivating. The overall amount of time spent on each of the three stages may vary slightly according to the topic, vocabulary or structure.



  • The presentation stage is as brief as possible. At this stage, the trainer is in control and the focus of attention.
  • The trainer introduces new language to the learners, making the meaning clear and giving examples of use.
  • Accurate pronunciation and intonation are established.
  • The trainer uses questions to involve learners in the process.



  • The practice stage involves learners speaking the language introduced during the presentation stage in a controlled manner, guided by the trainer.
  • The aim is for learners to form correct sentences using the target language. The trainer’s task is to get the learners to speak by prompting and directing them.
  • All mistakes in the target language are corrected.
  • Trainers aim to get all the learners producing the new language automatically with as few mistakes and as little hesitation as possible.



  • Once learners have mastered the target language item or structure and can use it competently, it is time to begin the production stage.
  • The activities here give learners more control over what they say and how they say it.
  • The production stage allows learners to use the language in a more creative way: combining new items with old, talking about themselves, acting out situations, expressing opinions, solving problems and so on.
  • The emphasis is on using language meaningfully rather than simply repeating it.

inlingua Method - the 10 principles


Only the target language is used in the lesson

The trainer will not translate for you, but will help you discover the meaning of words in context. This is done gradually and carefully, allowing each learner the time to understand the language.


The main focus of lessons is on speaking and listening

In order to use a language correctly, you have to first be able to speak it. Reading and writing are also taught, but language is introduced through speaking. The trainer ensures that all learners can pronounce every word correctly before the lesson proceeds.


Learn language patterns through examples, not explanations

Understanding the language in context encourages the learners to develop comprehension skills for general understanding. These abilities are required in everyday communication. Even grammar is learned by active example rather than through long and tedious grammar explanations.


Learners have the opportunity to speak as much as possible

Learners are encouraged to use the language actively throughout the learning process. This requires total participation. Trainers keep their talking time to a minimum to allow learners the maximum amount of practice during a training session.


Individual learning needs are met in a relaxed atmosphere

The aims of each learner are considered and integrated; courses are designed to accommodate different learning styles. This all occurs in a fun and relaxed environment.


A positive approach to error correction is adopted

Learners are encouraged to self-correct to achieve accurate pronunciation and to be able to use a language structure efficiently in conversation. We regard language learning as a process of continual improvement.


Previous knowledge of a topic is checked before presenting new language

If you already know a word or can use a structure, we will take it from there: building on your personal knowledge of the language.


Feel free to experiment

You are encouraged to express opinions and experiment with the new language you have learned.


A variety of training techniques are used

Although the aims of each session are clearly defined, trainers will use a variety techniques during the lesson. Different learning styles and contexts are considered: helping the learner to use the language in different real life situations.


Books are closed during the presentation and practice stages

The language is introduced to the learner through speaking before it is presented in the written form. The Course Book is later used exclusively for reading, writing, listening and speaking practice.

Textbooks and Materials

  • The inlingua organization produces its own educational material, especially designed to complement the inlingua Method.
  • This combination of special teaching techniques and special inlingua textbooks and materials entitles us to speak of the inlingua Method as an effective way to learn to speak languages.
  • There is a wide range of exclusive inlingua language training material. inlingua learning and training materials are specially developed for the inlingua network of schools by experts all over the world and cannot be found on the open market.

Where We Get Our Teaching Materials

  • All inlingua schools receive regular reports from our head office in Switzerland and from other language schools all over the world for scientific evaluation.
  • We use these reports to develop principles, programs and recommendations aimed at continuous improvement of our language teaching.
  • This front-line experience from all corners of the world also helps us fine-tune the teaching and learning aids used in all inlingua language schools.
